The 9 Gen 2013 redesign is part of Honda’s makeover of the Accord line. The new 2013 Accords will feature a stylish exterior revamp and a new, much more efficient engine and transmission.

We don’t know much details about the full line redesign yet, but we do know that the Accord Plug-In Hybrid will be available later this year, probably around winter. It will consist of a two-motor system powered by a 2.0-liter, i-VET inline four-cylinder, Atkinson cycle engine paired to a 120 kW electric motor powered by a 6kW lithium-ion battery. The powertrain will run through an electric Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The Plug-In Hybrid Accord will be able to employ a direct-drive mode, where only the engine drives the front wheels, for more efficient cruising while at high speeds. The two-motor hybrid system maximizes efficiency and fuel economy by continuously moving through three modes: ell-electric, gasoline-electric, and direct-drive. Regarding recharging time for the battery, we are looking at less than four hours with a 120-volt outlet and less than an hour and a half for a 240-volt charger.

Additionally, the 2013 Accord plug-in will possess some of the best features out there and a few that we’re starting to see among other Honda vehicles. The Accord will use cameras mounted on the rear and side windows with a lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring, and forward-crash warning technology to detect and warn of collisions. Furthermore, it will also come standard with Pandora integration, SMS text messaging system and Bluetooth connectivity.

The 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept was revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show and has a lot of Honda fans enthusiastic with the new generation of the Honda Accord.

American Honda’s Executive VP of Sales, John Mendel, praised the new 2013 Accord Coupe Concept saying that, “Marking the 30th anniversary of U.S. production, this new ninth-generation Accord will raise the bar again through a tour de force of new Honda powertrain and safety technologies, geared to ensure that Honda and the Accord continue to lead in fuel economy, safety and fun-to-drive performance.”

As of recent, competitors of the Accord in their segment have been equipping more fuel efficient engines to meet evolving consumer preferences. The Honda Accord has done that too, but still has the 2.4L four-cylinder engine standard. It has some serious zip to it generating 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. For those who still want more power, don’t fret, the 2013 Accord will come with a 3.5L V6  option. Also of note, for the first time in Accord history, drivers will get to experience a six-speed manual transmission, which will aid in bolstering efficiency itself.

Another first for the Accord, that will be present for the sedan model only, is the option for a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This limited powertrain is features a 2.0L i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and a 120 kW electric motor, which is fixed to a six kW/hr lithium-ion battery. Running on the Hybrid powertrain alone, the 2013 Accord Plug-In Hybrid can travel up to 10-15 miles  with a top speed of 62 miles per hour. Not bad for a back up powertrain! Expect more details to be released once we get closer to the release date later this year.

Performance and reliability are determined on road-test scores and its own predicted-reliability. Additionally, they base the cost of ownership on the five-year cost of owning the vehicle, which predicts costs in depreciation, sales tax, maintenance/repair, fuel consumption, loan interests, and insurance. The better a car’s performance is on the road-test and reliability ratings, and the less it costs to own over time, the better the car’s value.

The automotive editor for Consumer Reports, Rik Paul says that “A low price doesn’t necessarily make a car a good value. A cheap vehicle can wind up costing you more money over time or can be disappointing down the road. We think real value is what you get for your money.”

American Honda Motor Co.’s CEO, Tetsuo Iwamura, predicts that 70 percent of 2012 total sales will consist of 2013 models. Iwamura believes that Honda’s big three (the Civic, Accord and CR-V) will also dominate the market.

Some may call this a bold statement, but Ito just unveiled to the public several redesigned four & six-cylinder engines as well as a new family of CVT transmissions. Needless to say Honda is on their way to back up the claim. 

Consumers can expect these efficient engines to be infused in Honda vehicles starting at some point next year. All of the new efficiency technology is expected to be released by the end of 2013, making this efficiency push a pretty big overhaul. 

One of Honda’s Chief Engineers inside Research & Development, Keiji Ohtsu, stated that, “some vehicles now on the market could receive the new engines mid-cycle, before the vehicles receive full redesigns.” This doesn’t mean that all Honda vehicles will get an efficiency boost mid-cycle, as some will just go into their redesign grinding out with their standard engine saving Honda some bucks at the end of the day.

The 2012 Honda Odyssey received outstanding crash test scores via government testing. In both front and side crash testing the Odyssey received a five out of five stars and an overall 5-Star rating.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, IIHS, also recently named the 2012 Honda Odyssey a “Top Safety Pick” for 2012, which the Odyssey also received in 2011. A few standard safety features include anti-lock brakes paired with brake assist, stability/traction control and also side curtain airbags for all three rows.

The 2012 CR-Z will feature two trim levels, just the standard CR-Z as well as the loaded EX trim. The base models will be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission with and a CVT, continuously variable transmission, is also offered as an option.

As stated earlier, the EX is loaded from top to bottom. Although the CR-V is slated for release in the next couple months, Honda has done a great job of keeping all the specifications under wraps for the redesigned model, as very little is known about the newly redesigned CR-V. What has been released though is that the 2012 Honda CR-V will have a redesigned exterior for the first time in awhile. It is also said that the CR-V will feature a more fuel-efficient engine although the exact details of the updated power-train are not known.  Last year’s, 2011, CR-V featured EPA-estimated ratings of 21 miles per gallon city, and 28 miles per gallon highway and with the upgraded efficiency in the upcoming model don’t be surprised to see efficiency be above 30 miles per gallon.

For the new 2012 Insight, Honda is stepping up the game in fuel-economy and price point from last year’s model. Let’s skip to the new details:

1. Exterior: The outside look of the Insight didn’t change too much from last year. The front features a new grille, bumper and headlights; while the rear also has new bumpers and headlights. All while making the car more aerodynamic.

2. Interior: The most noticeable changes were made on the inside. On the front, Honda improved the rearward visibility and increased the cup holder size to fit large drinks. On the back, you will find a much more comfortable ride with increased legroom and a redesigned headliner shape which adds headroom space. As for the sound, the new Insight has increased sound-reducing materials so you can hear the pins drop in the back.

3. Fuel-Economy: The 2012 Insight offers a fuel-efficiency boost thanks to the improved aerodynamics and reduced friction in the engine; achieving 41mpg for city driving, 44mpg on the highway and a combined 42mpg.

4. Price point ($770 of shipping is not included):
            Base: $18,350
            LX: $20,125 (Add four-speaker audio system, USB audio interface, armrest console, floor mats, security system and map lights.)
            EX: $21,815 (Add alloy wheels, six-speaker audio system, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, heated side mirrors, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, automatic headlights, etc.)
            EX with navigation: $23,540 (Add rearview camera and 16GB flash card system to improve routing and FM weather updates)
